Desert Flower: The Extraordinary Journey Of A Desert Nomad
Desert Flower: The Extraordinary Journey Of A Desert Nomad

Here was one other my other favorites...memoirs that is. If the words 'genital mutilation' doesn't mean anything to you or you have no clue what I am talking about, READ THIS. No, it is not a practice of the past. It is practiced regularly in a few African nations. Wikipedia has an excellent information on it. So be sure to check the link. It provides a diagram of the different types. Each type is a varying degree of cutting. It also shows a map of Africa, showing the prevalence of it throughout different regions of the continent.

Anyway, this book is about a Somalian girl that runs away from her family at 13 or so in an effort to avoid marrying a sixty-something year old man that her father promised her to. She literally just took off running through the desert, with nothing. So check that one out too if you're interested.
